EmcArts Team & Midwest Arts Conference in St. Paul, MN coming up 9/9-9/12

I was looking at the description for the Midwest Arts Conference which I would LOVE to attend in St. Paul, Minnesota this September and one of the partners that helped put the conference together, a group called EmcArts really caught my attention after visiting their site, the work they are doing for arts & cultural organizations is truly unique and needed in this economic climate:

EmcArts' primary mission is to strengthen the capacities and effectiveness of nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. Comprised of an ensemble of experienced arts management consultants, the EmcArts Team was formed as a response to the challenges and ever-changing demands of the arts and culture marketplace.

While EmcArts works closely with our clients to create interactive programs and solutions tailored to each institution´s particular needs and vision, all EmcArts programs can help to transform organizations, communities, and whole fields of endeavor and are committed to the same fundamental goals:

  • creating solutions that stimulate real, long-term change
  • strengthening public programming and management of organizations
  • generating knowledge within organizations
  • developing networks within and between organizations
  • increasing the effectiveness of local cultural systems
  • building and sustaining high-performance organizations

Music Class a Hit with Kids and Online Viewers

PS22 Chorus of "Eye of the Tiger" by SURVIVOR

"Meet the choir of P.S. 22 from Staten Island, N.Y.

Who knew fifth-graders had so much soul?

'Fortunately, I knew fifth-graders had that much soul,' Breinberg said.

Known as 'Mr. B' to his students, Breinberg is the first to admit that he's not your typical chorus teacher. At times he acts more like an overgrown fifth-grader than the 35-year-old he is.

As he sees it, his job is to coax students to forget the sheet music and just sing. One of his tactics is to dispense with the usual music class fare."

Youth-led Live Media Arts Projects (LAMP) through Detroit Summer

This organization called Detroit Summer puts on youth-led summer programs which they call Live Media Arts Projects or LAMP summer programs:

2006 LAMP summer program "produced the amazing Rising Up From the Ashes: Chronicles of a Dropout Hip Hop Audio Documentary. Since the completion of that CD project we have developed workshops, gone on tour, conducted a city-wide survey and started an all-ages bi-monthly hip hop event called DTENSION. This has all been a part of a campaign to transform education in Detroit through youth-led creativity and critical thinking."

2008 LAMP summer program "took the campaign one step further, by creating videos inspired by some of the themes raised in the original LAMP CD. But instead of investigate the root problems leading people to drop-out, these videos focus in on solutions. These aren't just pie-in-the-sky solutions we dreamed up. We've developed them over the past two years of in-depth participatory research with youth in the city. We've also researched other places where these types of solutions have been implemented successfully. The 3 themes of the videos are: 'Cooperative Economics', 'Alternatives to Criminalization' and 'Respect'. Based on the work we've done, we really believe these models, if applied in our schools here in Detroit, would reduce the drop-out rate and make school a place where people actually wanted to come."

Twitter in Plain English: A Common Craft Explaination

Twitter in Plain English from leelefever on Vimeo.

Common Craft is back in full effect! These folks are geniuses when it comes to breaking seemingly complicated things down into the simplest of terms for the rest of us. In this video they cover Twitter, the popular micro-blogging platform that these days is impossible to not hear about on a daily basis.

When the US military is using Twitter as part of their communications strategy and mainstream media is telling Facebookers get with the program and take a back seat to Tweeters... well then I guess that means the rest of us better catch up - here's your chance!
