‘Festival of Arts’ Sept. 16-18, in Bloomfield, MI

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP-- Nativity Episcopal Church in Bloomfield Township,
Michigan will again host the annual “Festival of Arts” on September 16-18, 2011.

Since its start in 1956, art has been part of the mission statement at Nativity Episcopal
Church. For the “Festival of Arts” all manner of disciplines will be accepted, including
textiles, paintings, sculpture, photography, glass and pottery. Also included will be
acrylics, jewelry, watercolors, fibers, graphics and surface art. The last call for artists has been extended to August 31st .

Deborah Odette, formerly of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will
supervise display and hanging. The juried exhibition items will be for sale and the entire
presentation area will be decorated as an art gallery.

The juror will be Wayne State Professor Urban Jupina who is an accomplished fiber
artist and fine arts historian. Jupina, who is this year’s president of the Michigan
Surface Design Association recently presented in Europe at the International Triennial of
Tapestry in Lodz, Poland.

“We will have a gala opening reception on Friday, September 16, at 7:00 pm. for the
artists and presenters to mingle with the special guests,” said Henryka Olbrot. Olbrot is
president of the Lakeland Society of Artists which supports the show. She is an active art
ambassador in the Oakland, and Wayne County. The exhibition items can be for sale and
the presentation area will be decorated as an art gallery.

Special prizes will be an artist’s proof vase sculpted by local artist Patricia Auerbach and
potter Robert Nixon has done a unique clay presentation dish.

Nativity Episcopal Church began as an outreach of Christ Church Cranbrook. When the
church built its worship space in 1963, it turned to the renowned Cranbrook Academy
of Art for direction. The resulting nave is embraced by warm wood tones and artistic
surface statements. The church’s striking stained glass panels were created by Margaret
Cavanaugh in 1982.

Ruminate Magazine: Chewing on Life, Faith and Art announces a call to artists for a juried print exhibition in our Winter Issue #22, which releases mid-December and is distributed nationally. $500 cash prize and publication in Issue #22 for first place, plus publication in Issue 22 for runner-up.

The finalist juror is award-winning artist Sandra Bowden. The prize is open to all mediums and artists of all levels; no geographical restrictions. Federal Action Alert and MCACA Update

Federal Action Alert: Rep. Tim Walberg (MI – 7) Amendment

A few weeks ago we reported that the House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee began the funding cycle for Fiscal Year 2012 by approving legislation to fund the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) at $135.2 million, which is a reduction of $20 million from the current year.

Yesterday, as the U.S. House of Representatives began consideration of this legislation, Rep. Tim Walberg (MI – 7) offered an amendment to cut $10 million from the NEA, which has been cut by 13 percent in the legislation already! This would result in a $30 million cut to the NEA, the deepest single year cut in 16 years.

We need your help! Please click here to send a pre-drafted message to your member of Congress urging them to oppose the Walberg amendment.

Michigan receives over $4.5 million each year in grant funding from the NEA. This year, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs received a partnership grant from the NEA totaling $820,000 – which accounts for nearly a third of the council’s budget. The remainder of grant dollars is spread throughout the state to organizations and individual artists. As you know, this money helps retain and create tens of thousands of jobs and returns the NEA’s investment by pumping hundreds of millions of dollars back into local economies each year.

We aren’t alone! Last week the White House issued a veto threat of the budget bill. In the statement, the White House states that, among other things, cuts to the NEA “…would cut support for arts organizations across the country during a time when private and State arts funding is also highly constrained.”

Further, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID), chair of the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee and floor manager for the bill, has pledged to oppose any amendments to cut NEA funds below the level in the bill. Reps. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Todd Platts (R-PA), co-chairs of the Congressional Arts Caucus, and Jim Moran (D-VA), ranking minority member on the appropriations subcommittee, are also active in organizing opposition to further reductions in arts spending.

Additionally, if you reside in Congressman Tim Walberg’s district please also consider calling his office at 202-225-6276 to urge him to withdraw his amendment.

MCACA Grant Process Update

Last Friday the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs met at The Henry Ford to discuss the Fiscal Year 2012 grant process, discretionary requests and their strategic plan.

This year’s grants will be a 9-month project, running from January through September of 2012. Grant guidelines will be available the second week of August, with October 3rd being the deadline for POP’s and mini-grant applications.

As you may know, the Council is now requiring POP’s applicants to have two of their most recent year-end financial statements entered into the Michigan Cultural Data Project (CDP) to help demonstrate their economic impact. However, while requiring CDP, the Council voted to approve a plan to reduce application paperwork by instead using portions of the CDP. This year, applicants will not have to complete a budget and economic impact form because that information will be provided through data collected in the CDP.

with 2011 Arts Legacy Award

WIXOM, Mich. – ArtServe Michigan, Michigan’s only statewide nonprofit arts-advocacy organization, has selected Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore as the recipient of the organization’s 2011 Arts Legacy Award. Moore will be presented with the honor as part of a special awards event during the Traverse City Film Festival at the State Theatre on Saturday, July 30, 2011.

Founder and President of the State Theatre and Traverse City Film Festival, Moore is being recognized for his contributions as a filmmaker, author and advocate for arts and culture and his leadership in art house theater restoration initiatives in Michigan.

“Michael Moore’s dedication to Michigan arts is unmistakable,” said Jennifer Goulet, president of ArtServe Michigan. “Michael’s depth as a writer and filmmaker, passion for the Michigan film industry and dedication to restoration of Michigan’s art house theaters are just a few of the many reasons we selected him to receive this year’s Arts Legacy Award.”

Moore’s nonprofit Traverse City Film Festival and its art house, the State Theatre, have brought millions of dollars to the Traverse City area since 2005. His statewide State Theatre Project is assisting other Michigan communities in renovating, reopening and reviving their own art house theaters, funded by State of Michigan tax incentive rebate funds from the Michigan production of "Capitalism: A Love Story."

In July 2010, Moore was elected to the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was appointed by Governor Granholm in 2008 to the Michigan Film Advisory Committee.

ArtServe Michigan’s Arts Legacy Awards were introduced in 2009 for special presentation to individuals or organizations significantly contributing to the support and empowerment of arts, culture and arts education in Michigan.

In November 2009, these awards were first presented to Michigan’s auto industry leaders – Chrysler, Ford Motor Company and General Motors – for their significant and lasting contributions to strengthen and sustain arts and cultural initiatives in Michigan. ArtServe’s 2010 award was presented to Rick DeVos for his vision and commitment to the ArtPrize initiative in Grand Rapids.

The award sculpture was created through a partnership of The Henry Ford whose glass artisans crafted its glass spheres and former Michigan artist Garry Venable who crafted its wood base. The award design was originally commissioned by the Masco Corporation Foundation and created by Grand Rapids artist Nathan Goddard for ArtServe’s 2007 Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture.

Michael Moore is the Oscar-winning filmmaker of "Bowling for Columbine," "Roger & Me," "Fahrenheit 9/11," "Sicko," and "Capitalism: A Love Story." He won the Emmy Award for his NBC show, "TV Nation." He won the British Book of the Year award for his political humor book, "Stupid White Men" (which spent more than a year on the New York Times best seller list) and has written five other New York Times best selling books. Four of the eight top grossing documentaries of all time are Michael Moore films.

The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission is seeking submissions from qualified artists to be considered to create artwork for permanent display. The public artwork will be installed in the main lobby of the new Ann Arbor Justice Center, 301 East Huron Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The building houses the 15^th Judicial District Court and the Ann Arbor Police Services. This artwork should be a ceiling mounted or suspended piece that will make an impression looking in from both sides of the corner site, both day and night, with either incorporated or reflected lighting. The artwork should complement the building and surrounding site environment, and speak to the public purposes of the building. When the public approaches the Huron Street entrance to the AAJC, they will walk through a rain garden and past a piece designed by Herbert Dreiseitl, a large water feature sculpture. Develops budget proposals and monitors all financial affairs of the organization in collaborates with the treasurer, bookkeeper, and auditor.
Manage the Center’s operations, including marketing and events, personnel and volunteers.
Build and maintain positive relationships with members, partner organizations, policymakers, media, and other community members.
Represent the organization in the community through guest speaker or media opportunities.
Ensure compliance with state and federal requirements to maintain our non-profit status.
Prepare and publish newsletters, advertising, web site content, video presentations and any other publications needed to promote the organization.

Michigan Youth Arts, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), and ArtServe Michigan, is conducting the 2011 Michigan Arts Education Survey. This survey builds on past studies. It will be the first time Michigan research includes information about the status ofarts education at the school building level and examines the depth and breadth of student learning in the visual and performing arts - dance, drama/theatre, music, media arts and visual art.

Please take the opportunity to tell them about your school. This will help in preparing accurate data for our Michigan arts advocacy efforts.

Those selected for the piece will be paid for performance.

The Woodland Indian Art Show & Market invites Native American artists inspired by the Woodland Indian style to participate in the 2011 Woodland Indian Art Show and Market. Artists must apply as an Arts Vendor, and then can enter a piece in the Juried Art Competition.

The deadline to apply as an Arts Vendor and enter the juried art show is June 6, 2011. You will receive a letter of acceptance based on the decision of this year’s Chief Judge.

Booth space for 20 artists vendors will be approximately 10 X 10 feet, with one table and one chair supplied. You may bring additional tables, canopies and chairs or apply for an additional 10 X 10 space on the application form.

Fisher Foundation Next Generation seeks proposals for projects designed for Detroit children (grades K – 12) to nurture intellectual and creative development through the arts. GIFTS OF ART at the University of Michigan Health System is currently accepting proposals for our September 2011 through August 2012 exhibit year. One of the first and most comprehensive arts in healthcare programs nationwide, Gifts of Art brings the world of art & music to the University of Michigan Health System.

Our nine galleries display 50 exhibits a year. They include 2-D and 3-D spaces that are viewed by approximately 10,000 people a day. This makes our galleries some of the most widely visited indoor, non-museum exhibit spaces in the state.

Entry Requirements

Selections will be made from online submissions or submissions by mail. Individual artists must provide a minimum of 12 professional quality images. Group shows should provide a minimum of 24 images. Submitted images must reflect the proposed exhibit. In selecting artwork, Gifts of Art's primary mission is to create a more comfortable and calming atmosphere within the often stressful environment of a hospital and to provide a positive distraction for our patients, visitors and staff.

Submissions by Mail

Governor Snyder Recommends $2.58 million for MCACA

MCACA Budget

This morning Governor Rick Snyder released his Executive Budget Recommendations for Fiscal Year’s 2012 and 2013. The Governor’s budget represents $1.5 billion in cuts and numerous other reforms.

In his detailed proposal, Governor Snyder recommends $2,580,300 for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for each of the two fiscal years. In addition to this, the Governor’s budget allows for the council to keep returned or unused grant dollars instead of turning those funds over to the General Fund as in years previous – a first.

The one issue not directly addressed in the budget is the administrative line for the two-person staff of the MCACA. ArtServe will work with the Governor, Legislature and Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to ensure that administrative expenses are addressed in the final budget.

I think it goes without saying that we are happy to, once again, be considered a priority under the executive office. We look forward to working with Governor Snyder, the Legislature and the MEDC to continue to improve upon the state’s support for arts, culture and arts education.

While Governor Snyder’s support means a great deal to ArtServe and arts advocates, the budget process is just beginning. We will be in touch with you in the coming weeks to ask you to make your voices heard when the MCACA’s budget goes before the House and Senate General Government Appropriations Subcommittees.

NEA UPDATE

This morning the U.S. House of Representatives passed Congressman Tim Walberg’s amendment to reduce Fiscal Year 2011 funding for the NEA by a total of $45 to $46 million.

Thank you very much to those advocates who contacted their members of Congress and Congressman Walberg directly. Know that this is not over. While we are not sure as to how the final bill will pan out we do know that it still has to go through the Senate and be signed by the President – who previously stated his desire to veto a spending package that drastically cuts so many important programs mid-stream.

Cultural Alliance of Southeastern MI: HELP STOP DRASTIC NEA CUTS

The following message was sent out today by CASM (the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern MI) to their email distribution list:

WE NEED YOUR HELP TODAY TO HELP STOP DRASTIC NEA CUTS

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS reports that overnight Sunday the House Appropriations Committee made even deeper cuts to the NEA and dozens of other programs and agencies. The proposed cut to the NEA is now set at $22.5 million (yesterday it was $12 million) which would represent the largest cut to that agency in 16 years.

A key paragraph in yesterday's Washington Post story covering these budget cuts explains what is happening: The Republican Study Committee, "Its ranks swollen with enthusiastic freshman who have never taken calls from constituents angry about loss of a favored program...threatened to oppose the package on the House floor next week unless deeper cuts were adopted."

It is quite possible these members of the Republican Study Committee will offer amendments to fully eliminate the NEA during floor consideration. We need you to send a message to your Members calling on them to reject these cuts to the NEA because they will negatively affect the district back home.

By taking two minutes today to send a customizable message through the Americas for the Arts E-Advocacy Center, we will automatically send letters on your behalf to both your Senators and your House Representative. This will ensure that your voice will be heard by Members of Congress (especially freshmen members), who are now assessing their constituents' viewpoints on these budget cuts.

ArtServe Michigan FEDERAL ACTION ALERT: Vote to Cut NEA Imminent! Attempt at Elimination Possible? House set to cut $22.5 million to NEA – Possible Elimination Amendment Looming? The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has proposed a mid-year budget cut to dozens of valuable federal programs, including support for the arts. On Thursday it was announced that they were to cut the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) budget mid-stream from $167.5 million to $155 million. Twenty-four hours later we learned that members of the Republican Study Committee plan to offer amendments that will cut funding to the NEA by $22.5 million, taking funding from $167.5 to $145 million – the lowest level of funding in 16 years. Unfortunately it might not stop there, with the same members quite possibly attempting to introduce an amendment to ELIMINATE the NEA. There are three members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation that belong to the Republican Study Committee. Dave Camp (MI – 4) Bill Huizenga (MI – 2) Tim Walberg (MI – 7) We must make it known, especially to the members above, that supporting cuts that create and support jobs at home is unacceptable. Here’s what you can do to help: 1. If you haven’t already, please take two minutes now to send customizable messages to your Members of Congress via the E-Advocacy Center. Consider adding the following to the end of the pre-loaded message: For Fiscal Year 2011 the funding provided by the NEA, and matched by the state, represented an appropriation of just over $2.5 million ($1.5 million in state GF dollars and $1 million in federal NEA funds) to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). Support from the NEA will allow the MCACA to make 220 grants that will create 1,616 jobs while retaining another 6,585 jobs. Further, those organizations will hire an additional 42,512 contract workers based in Michigan. The slashing of programs and agencies that create and sustain millions of jobs and provide billions of dollars to the economy is irresponsible. While government does have a responsibility to drastically reduce the federal deficit, we must not let shortsightedness get in the way of common sense. Below is a federal action alert sent out through the Michigan Historic Preservation

As we have been reporting, the funding levels for the federal government are currently

being provided through a Continuing Resolution (CR) that expires on March 4, 2011.

This CR, as result of Congress being unable to agree on a budget, extended funding

for FY 2011 at FY 2010 levels.

What happens in February and March is anyone's guess. Many believe that there will

be a serious attempt to cut funding for the rest of FY 2011 to FY 2008 levels, or much

worse. Here is what a rollback to FY 2008 would mean:

With so many disparate voices on the Hill, bills specifically calling for the elimination

of Save America's Treasures, Preserve America and Heritage Areas, and a focus on

reduced spending and deficit reduction, it is important that we let our legislators know

how important historic preservation is - not only for the protection of our American

heritage, but for their ability to stimulate economic development and to create jobs.

WE NEED YOU TO CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES AND

ASK THAT HE OR SHE:

1. Provide at least level funding for the rest of FY 2011 (at FY 2010 levels) for our

nation's historic preservation programs.

2. If necessary, defend our nation's historic preservation programs from elimination

or substantial cuts.

3. Support the heritage preservation and job creation effects of our federal historic

preservation programs.

MCACA Income Tax Check Off

In December of 2008 Governor Granholm signed legislation creating the Michigan

Council for the Arts Fund check off box on the Michigan Voluntary Contribution

Schedule form. This tax season, Michigan residents have their opportunity to

dedicate a portion of their tax return to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural

Affairs. Every dollar donated will go directly to supporting local arts and cultural

organizations and events throughout the state. Last year, the first year of the check

off, individuals contributed nearly $28,000 which helped further the reach of the

council by providing additional grant dollars to organizations and schools throughout

the state.

We need your help to spread the word that Michigan taxpayers can choose to

dedicate $5, $10, or more to the state arts council as they prepare their taxes for

this April. In anticipation of the upcoming tax season, ArtServe Michigan, in

partnership with Tanner Friedman, has developed a social media and email strategy

to help spread the word. Below you will find both strategies that you or your

organization can easily follow to help spread a unified message across the state.

Check 7for11 to contribute to the revitalization of Michigan’s communities

through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Michigan Council for the Arts Fund - Local Grant Programs: Help keep your community

contributions are returned to local communities and nonprofit organizations in the form

of grants. Programs and services funded by these monies include arts education and

low-cost performances and exhibits.

Attached is Form 4642, the 2010 MICHIGAN Voluntary Contributions Schedule, which

is the form tax payers will need to fill out to contribute to the Michigan Council for the

Arts Fund. You can print these off for your audience/members/supporters or at least

encourage them to ask their tax preparer to complete the 4642 form for them.

Earlier this week, 165 conservative members of Congress representing the Republican Study Committee called for termination of the National Endowment for the Arts and key arts education programs at the U.S. Department of Education.

Please take two minutes to take action and send a message to your member of Congress in support of the National Endowment for the Arts AND arts education at the U.S. Department of Education.

Each link will take you to a draft email that requires nothing but your approval of the content and your address. Your help in ensuring that the Michigan Congressional delegation knows of the importance of the NEA and arts education programs within the U.S. Department of Education is greatly appreciated!

Cultural Data Project – Organizational Participation Needed

In the fall of 2008, ArtServe, the Pew Charitable Trust and the other members of the Michigan CDP Task Force began the information discovery process that would lead to the arrival of the Cultural Data Project in Michigan.

If you are not aware, the CDP is a powerful online management tool designed to strengthen arts and cultural organizations. It began in Pennsylvania in 2004 and will be operating in 11 states and Washington DC by the end of 2011. Arts and cultural organizations enter financial, programmatic and operational data into a standardized online form and can then use the CDP several different ways.

The abridged version of what CDP will provide organizations is:

After entering your historical financial and operational data, you can rely on technology to reformat the data to match the needs of different funders.
Tools to easily track trends in performance and benchmark against the more than 10,000 organizations in the system nationally
Reports that will help you make your case for support to funders, board members and policymakers.

Just as important as the value it brings organizations is the aggregated statistical data that it will offer to make the case about the impact of the arts in Michigan. If you have been paying attention to any of the discussions in Lansing regarding the budget, you’ll know that data and value for money is very important to Governor Snyder. The more organizations that participate, the bigger the impact we will be able to demonstrate when we testify in front of the Senate and House General Government Appropriations Subcommittee in March.

I’ll be honest with you – the steps to find the correct information and enter the data are demanding and may take some time. However, YOU’RE NOT ALONE. The Michigan CDP Help Desk is offered as a FREE service to assist you along every step of the way. If you require the assistance of an accountant, you will be put in touch with a specialist that will help you for FREE. If you have questions of which figure goes where, the Help Desk will stay on the phone until you get it right – for FREE.

While many organizations have already taken the lead by beginning to enter their data or completing their entry to receive “Gold Star” status (information is verified and ready for research), unfortunately there are still many who have not. Some organizations have commented that they do not have the capacity or time to take on such a project.

I can certainly sympathize with the workload each organization is currently taking on and can assure you that, as nonprofits, we are all under the same amount of stress - juggling increased programs with smaller staffs...and definitely not enough hours in the day. Those who refuse to participate will miss out on not only an opportunity to possess a new organizational management tool designed to strengthen their organization, but they will miss out on contributing to the advocacy efforts of ArtServe Michigan.

Currently, ten Michigan’s arts, culture and arts education funders either require or recommend the use of CDP. This means that, for those that require it, organizations will have to submit a funder report to the grantmaker through CDP in order to be eligible to receive a grant. In the end, it is up to each organization to participate and be counted. While resources are low, this is the one tool that provides the free support you need to participate and brings more value with it than the time it takes to participate.

ARTSERVE: 2011 MCACA grant recipient? MICDP made easy step-by-step

Congratulations on receiving a FY 2011 MCACA POPS award.

You are required to send MCACA an MCACA funder report (two years) that is generated through

the Michigan CDP. The steps to generate a Funder Report in CDP are:

1. Read the New User Orientation on the website

2. Watch the training videos, which range from a short general overview to a 20 minute

presentation with specific instructions

If you attended a training workshop or webinar, steps 1 & 2 cover much of the same

material. You can sign up for free 90-minute New User Orientation webinars offered the first

Wednesday of every month at 10am and 2pm.

3. Gather information about your group’s last two completed fiscal years, see the Data

Profile Instructions for list of what will be needed.

4. Type in your data from the fiscal year completed two years ago first. Once it is done,

then you should enter the most recently completed fiscal year. You do the work in this

order because the prior year will autofill into the more recent year, allowing to see both

years at the same time as you enter data.

5. Once a fiscal year is entered, you hit the submit button and an error check is run for math

errors. Correct any errors.

6. Go to the Reports section, where you will see the list of Michigan funders requiring or

recommending the CDP Funder Report. Click on the funder you want and follow the

instructions.

The MCACA Funder Report is due, via email as a PDF or hard copy, when you return your grant

agreement. The MCACA is working on getting those grant agreements out as soon as possible

but can’t give an exact date at this time. The MCACA will not release your first payment until the

funder report is received. You will receive your grant – but when you receive it depends on when

you send back the Funder Report to the MCACA.

Please note that an additional new requirement this year is to provide the MCACA with a

copy of notification of your award to legislators. This should also be returned with your grant

acknowledgement requirements.

$4,750 in Cash Prizes: New Mackinac Art Museum Holds Contemporary Art & Photography Exhibition Contests

Mackinaw City, MI — Professional and amateur artists and photographers, here’s your chance to shine Mackinac-style! Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) announces two juried exhibition contests for The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, offering a total of $4,750 in cash prizes, plus the opportunity to have your work displayed in special contemporary art and photography exhibitions within this state-of-the-art, Mackinac Island museum. All material must be Mackinac-related, complementing the historic Mackinac fine and decorative art already on display.

For artists who have a special talent for painting, drawing, sketching and other two-dimensional work, excluding photography, consider entering the juried Contemporary Art Exhibition. Esteemed juror Robert J. Wilbert, professor emeritus in the Department of Art & Art History at Wayne State University, will choose the finest pieces for inclusion in the Contemporary Art Exhibition at the new art museum. Wilbert has work in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts and was commissioned by the United States Postal Service to design a U.S. postage stamp. He will also choose the second annual “Gold Medal” winner, who will receive $2,500 cash, generously donated by the Mackinac Arts Council, a gold medal, and his or her name on the gold medal plaque. There will also be second and third place winners, with cash awards of $750 and $500 respectively. Entries must be postmarked by May 16, 2011. The exhibition runs from July 15-October 9, 2011.

Photographers also have a unique opportunity to showcase their best work to visitors from around to world. Announcing MSHP’s first Mackinac Island Photography Exhibition, aimed at sharing Mackinac moments captured on “film.” Photographers can share their vision of Mackinac through various forms, including digital or analog, color, monochrome, or any alternative photographic process. Juried by talented S. Kay Young, a Native American Detroit-based artist and teacher at Oakland Community College, Farmington Hills Heritage Park Art Program, this photography contest offers a first place cash prize of $500, second place of $350, and third place of $150. Young will select an array of inspirational photographs to appear in the art museum’s Mackinac Island Photography Exhibition, open August 1-October 9, 2011. Entries must be postmarked by June 1, 2011.

MCACA Grant Awards

This afternoon, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) approved grants to 220 organizations, located in 41 counties, totaling $2,271,650 in awards. These grants represented awards in the Program for Operational and Projects Support, the Regional Regranting program and the Services to the Field program.

The Program for Operational and Project Support received 190 grant applications requesting $1,624,566. Of the 190 requests, the MCACA funded 176 grants totaling $1,450,650 in funding support. The Regional Regranting Program was awarded $500,000 in administrative and grant funding, allowing the state’s 19 regional regranters to distribute the council’s support throughout each region of the state. Finally, the council awarded 6 applications within the Services to the Field program for a total of $321,000.

1/15: Op for Detroit Artists from CAID/Whitdel Arts

Assistant Dean of College for Creative Studies and internationally renowned artist offer unique opportunity for Detroit area artists.

Detroit area artists will have an opportunity to have their work critiqued during a studio visit by artist Charles McGee and notable arts and culture critic Rebecca Mazzei. Beginning on January 15th, Whitdel Arts, a new contemporary art gallery in Southwest Detroit, will allow artists working in all mediums to install their work for an open call exhibition. Once the exhibition opens to the public on February 5th, McGee and Mazzei will select two to three artists each who they will visit in their studio to discuss and critique their work. “This is a great opportunity for artists to gain some valuable feedback on their work by two highly respected individuals in the Detroit art community”, says Whitdel Arts co-director Lauren Montgomery.

Charles McGee, who is the founder of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID), has paintings, assemblages and sculptures in prestigious national and international collections, and on permanent display at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Rebecca Mazzei is currently the Assistant Dean at the College for Creative Studies and former Arts and Culture Editor of the Metro Times.

Whitdel Arts invites artists working in all mediums (drawing, painting, printmaking, photo, sculpture, installation, video, etc.) to install their own work during the drop off dates listed below. Whitdel Arts Co-Directors will be available to offer help and advice on installation, as well as lighting advice and other exhibition preparation.

Artwork must be dropped off in person at Whitdel Arts on the specified drop off dates. Each artist may submit not more than 5 pieces. Accepted work will be on a “first come, first serve” basis, as a limited amount of space is available for this exhibition. Whitdel Arts reserves the right to omit any artwork if the artist submits more than 5 pieces. No entry fee is required to participate, and ⅓ percentage of any sales during the exhibition will go towards the gallery.

Exhibition drop off and installation dates:

Saturday, January 15 from noon-3pm
Tuesday, January 18 from noon- 5pm
Saturday, January 22 from noon-3pm

Colleen Armstrong to retire after 39 years w/ MCACA

MCACA’s long time financial/administrative supervisor, Colleen Armstrong, will be retiring January 1, 2011 after more than 39 years of state service… all with the Arts Council.

Colleen began her state service on May 23, 1971, with the Department of Management and Budget, not long after the Michigan Council for Arts was created through an Executive Order signed by former Governor William Milliken. She has remained with the program throughout her career, witnessing many changes over the years with each new Administration. Through it all, she has remained a steadfast advocate for the MCACA and the entire field.

As Colleen well knows, financial pressures and changing expectations have combined to make this a challenging time to work in state government. With the personal sense of duty that she brings to work each day, she has been able to meet this challenge with enthusiasm. This has been deeply appreciated by the arts community and others who have benefited directly from her work.

On a personal note… I do not believe that I am exaggerating when I say that Colleen has played a major role in most every success we have had at MCACA during my tenure. I will truly miss her.

Federal Action Alert: Senator Coburn Amendment

United States Senator Tom Coburn (R - OK) has introduced an amendment (Senate Amendment 4697) to The Food Safety Act (S. 501), scheduled to be voted on Monday, November 29th that would place a ban on earmarks in FY11, FY12 and FY13 appropriations. Sen. Coburn (R-OK) is joined by Sens. McCaskill (D-MO) and Mark Udall (D-CO) and others.

While ArtServe has previously stated its position on earmarks, Senator Coburn's amendment is written too broadly, putting at risk numerous federal, state and regional arts, culture and arts education programs.

While it is obvious that many cultural project earmarks would be included in this ban, we are told that this amendment would likely prohibit funding to VSA Arts and the Kennedy Center for their arts education programming. The amendment could even impact the competitive grants of the Arts in Education program as well. Additionally, many education organizations from Teach for America and Communities in Schools to the National Writing Project and Reading is Fundamental are targeted by this amendment.

While many may be in favor of an elimination of earmarks, the programs we support are quite different from other congressionally directed spending that may only benefit a specific state, district or region and change year-to-year. In contrast, these programs are authorized nationally-structured programs with many years of bipartisan support and that benefit thousands of students and families in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In short, we are not what are envisioned as typical congressionally directed spending items that have invoked the public's demand for earmark reform.

The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, invites applications for the 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards, formerly the Coming Up Taller Awards.

Over the last 13 years, the Coming Up Taller Awards have recognized the accomplishments of exceptional arts and humanities after-school and out-of-school programs across the country. Its new name will serve to enhance recognition of the national significance of the award. Twelve programs will receive $10,000 and an invitation to accept their award from the President's Committee's Honorary Chairman, First Lady Michelle Obama, at a ceremony at the White House. The Stevens Point Sculpture Park is accepting submission of sculpture work for their second annual, three-year outdoor sculpture exhibition. A local jury will choose pieces for display from April 15, 2011 through April 15, 2014.

The Stevens Point Sculpture Park, located in Central Wisconsin, is a 20-acre, city-owned park with nearly a mile of forested trails that are used year-round by people of all ages for biking, skiing, running and walking. The Park offers a wide variety of trees and geographic features including a pond, wetland and forest. It is a zone 4 growing season (which includes cold winters and hot summers).

The Stevens Point Sculpture Park is committed to providing a welcoming and accessible outdoor venue for sculpture and arts exhibitions, activities, and educational programs by enhancing the cultural life of our community and surrounding region through a diverse program of education, collaboration and experimentation.

The Park is located close to elementary, middle and high schools, and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Park’s trails connect to the Stevens Point Green Circle Trail, a nationally recognized 31-mile recreational corridor that encircles the Stevens Point Urban Area (1993 National Park Service Award).

Artist submissions that are selected will receive $750 for a three-year exhibition loan of their piece. Sculpture submissions need to be free standing; foundations or bases are not provided. Delivery, installation, and return of work are the artist’s responsibility (please note in artist’s statement if any special installation needs are expected).

A wide variety of work will be considered, including: site specific work, ephemeral and/or permanent work, work in a variety of scales, art with a performance component, etc. Materials and scale must be appropriate for an outdoor environmental location. The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), in partnership with Americans for the Arts and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, is pleased to invite you to join one of two conference calls hosted by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) on November 10, and November 12, 2010 at 1:00 p.m..

This October, President Obama issued a Proclamation in recognition of National Arts and Humanities Month in which he wrote, "By supporting the fields that feed our imagination, strengthen our children's education, and contribute to our economy, our country will remain a center of creativity, and our society will stand as one where dreams can be realized."

The PCAH is very aware of the great work organizations like yours do in communities across the country, and we will continue to work on raising the visibility of the field and the resources available to it at the federal level. In that vein, we have been working with CNCS to ensure that AmeriCorps grants are available for qualified arts and humanities organizations working in community service, as well to increase the pool of eligible arts organizations that apply for these funds.

This past Tuesday, voters from across the state went to the polls to elect candidates to federal, state and local offices. As you know, voters have elected Rick Snyder to serve as Michigan’s 48th Governor. Additionally, Republicans have gained full control of the state legislature garnering 26 of 38 seats in the Senate and 63 of 110 seats in the House.

The Arts Are Part of the Economic Recovery Solution

WASHINGTON, DC — November 3, 2010 — Americans for the Arts President and CEO Robert L. Lynch gave the following statement on the Election Day results:

“Frustration with the nation’s lack of economic recovery is clearly top of mind among voters and candidates. Likewise, nonprofit arts organizations have also felt the sting of the recession with state and local government arts funding dropping as much as 16 percent, and private charitable gifts to the arts declining $1.2 billion in just two years. Additionally, individual artists have been experiencing unemployment at twice the rate of other educated, professional workers.

As our newly-elected leaders at the federal, state, and local levels focus on creating jobs and growing the economy, it is imperative that they understand the profound role the arts play in spurring economic growth and job creation. The nation’s 100,000 nonprofit arts organizations are part of the small business sector, and the nation’s 2.2 million professional artists are among the millions of business entrepreneurs fueling the economy. It is also important that our newly-elected leaders appreciate the connection between arts education training and the development of creative and innovative workforce skills, which are essential to future workers to compete effectively in the 21st Century global economy.

For the past four years, the House of Representatives initiated several hearings to spotlight the role of the arts in both the economy and in workforce development, yielding more than $100 million in new public investments in the arts and culture. Americans for the Arts looks forward to working with the bipartisan Congressional Arts Caucus and Senate Cultural Caucus on Capitol Hill to continue educating freshman members on how the arts fuel our nation’s economy. We want to congratulate three of the four Caucus members who were up for re-election on their convincing win last night and look forward to working closely with them in the 112th Congress. They are Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Representative Todd Platts (R-PA), and Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY). We also look forward to working with Representative Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Representative Mark Kirk (R-IL), both already champions of the arts in the House, as they move into their newly elected Senate seats.

At the state government level, several arts champions— based on their record in other public offices or platform statements—have been elected as Governor. They include Governors-elect Jerry Brown (D-CA), Dan Malloy (D-CT), Tom Corbett (R-PA), Neil Abercrombie (D-HI), Lincoln Chaffee (I-RI), Mark Dalton (D-MN), John Hickenlooper (D-CO) and Rick Snyder (R-MI).

Locally, there were 232 Mayoral elections in cities with a population of over 30,000. Among the many new promising arts champions, Providence, RI Mayor-Elect Angel Taveras and Louisville, KY Mayor-elect Greg Fischer identified the arts as a way to harness local talent and creative energy to power the economy.

Americans for the Arts will soon begin conducting the next installment of national research to document the size, impact, and trends of the nonprofit arts industry for its Arts and Economic Prosperity IV study. The previous study demonstrated that the nonprofit arts industry generates $166.2 billion of economic activity annually, which supports 5.7 million full-time equivalent jobs.”

Next Steps:
Americans for the Arts will be undertaking a number of comprehensive initiatives to welcome and educate new members of Congress, but we can’t do this without you! Starting today and in the next few months, we ask you to:

* Send a letter of congratulations to each elected leader representing your community (federal, state, and local levels) and identify yourself or your organization as a resource on arts policy issues.
* Ask all freshman members of Congress to begin thinking about joining the bipartisan Congressional Arts Caucus or Senate Cultural Caucus. We will be sending more information about this in the coming weeks.
* Work with your state and local arts advocacy organizations to develop a unified message to your newly-elected state and local leaders.
* Save the dates of April 4-5, 2011 to come to Washington, DC for National Arts Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. We especially need grassroots advocates representing the districts and states of newly elected Congressional members.
* Become an official member of Americans for the Arts Action Fund, it’s free and it helps you stay connected to all the latest political breaking news impacting the arts.

Changes to NEA Guidelines

To help you plan for your application to the NEA in 2011, we'd like to give you a preview of some changes to the NEA's Grants for Arts Projects application guidelines that will be posted in January 2011.

Here are the highlights of the changes:

* The Access to Artistic Excellence and Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth categories have been replaced with a new funding category called Art Works, which will embody the agency's guiding principle: "Art works."

*Art Works will support the four outcomes mandated by the Agency's 2010 Strategic Plan:
- Creation: The creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence,
- Engagement: Public engagement with diverse and excellent art,
- Learning: Lifelong learning in the arts, and
- Livability: The strengthening of communities through the arts.

You will be asked to select the outcome that is most relevant to your project and that reflects the results expected to be achieved by your project. If you receive a grant, you also will be asked to provide evidence that the outcome was achieved.

* Within these outcomes, innovative projects are encouraged. To ensure that innovative ideas and formats for artistic expression are supported, the NEA is requiring that Consortium applications be for innovative projects (see below for a definition).

What does this mean to you?

If you've been applying to Access to Artistic Excellence, you now will apply to Art Works.

* The two application deadlines are at the same times as last year (March 10 and August 11, 2011).
* You'll continue to go to the discipline that is most relevant to your project as your starting place.
* All types of projects supported in the past continue to be eligible in Art Works.

If you've been applying to Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth, you now will apply to Art Works through the Arts Education discipline.

* If you have a pre-K through 12 curriculum-based project that aligns with national or state arts education standards, your new starting place for funding will be with the Arts Education discipline.
* You will need to make a schedule adjustment within the Arts Education discipline. You may apply to either the March 10 or August 11, 2011, application deadlines; there no longer is a June deadline. The March deadline will be for community-based projects with project start dates of January 1, 2012, or later. The August deadline will be for school-based projects with project start dates of June 1, 2012, or later.

If you will be applying for an official Consortium project in Art Works, you must apply for an innovative project. An official Consortium project is an exception to the one-application rule and represents a partnership of organizations that undertakes a shared project. In general, innovative projects are characterized as those that may prove transformative with the potential for meaningful change; are distinctive by offering fresh insights and new value for the field and/or the public through unconventional solutions; and may be shared and/or emulated, or lead to other innovations.

A note about Challenge America Fast-Track: This funding category will still be available with an application deadline of May 26, 2011. This year we're implementing a policy to limit consecutive-year funding. If you've received a Challenge America Fast-Track grant for the last three years, you are not eligible to apply to the Fast-Track category this year. You may apply to other NEA funding opportunities including Art Works.

Grants.gov update: Grants.gov has implemented new security requirements for the use of the Grants.gov system. Among the changes, you are required to change your password every 90 days. See www.grants.govfor more details.

Once the Grants for Arts Projects guidelines are posted in January, take a look, and if anything is unclear, contact the discipline staff that is appropriate to your project (see "Agency Contacts").

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Offers the 2011 Bus Grant Program to Help K-12 Students Access Michigan Cultural Institutions

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) is offering grantsof up to $500 to Michigan K-12 schools for the transportation cost of an arts andculture-related field trip. The destination or performance must be chosen by theschool from a list of organizations affiliated with MCACA.

This is the second year of this program. In Fiscal Year 2010, MCACA funded146 schools, benefitting more than 17,000 students. The need for this funding isstaggering. Last year’s applications revealed significant decreases or no field tripfunding available in their districts, coupled with increasing inability for parentsto pay for these valuable experiences. Cultural institutions have also seen theiraudience and visitor numbers drop substantially, and research shows that thesingle largest factor in building adult audiences at cultural events is exposure asa child.

This program is an attempt to stem this downward cycle and improveeducational experiences. An elementary music teacher wrote, “I can teach themsongs, I can teach them the beat and the notes and even how to play someinstruments. I can play CDs of famous symphonies and arias, and tell them aboutBach and Beethoven. But what I cannot do within the confines of my classroomis give them a true aesthetic experience of a live performance of top notchmusicians.”

ArtServe Update: Statement on the DIA Line Item

ARTSERVE MICHIGAN UPDATE:

STATEMENT ON THE DIA LINE ITEM

If you are not already aware, last Tuesday the Detroit Institute of Arts received a line item appropriation of up to $10 million as a one-time grant supported by General Fund dollars from lapsed FY 2010 year-end funds. As we have come to understand, this action by administration officials and legislators fulfilled a prior state commitment to assist in supporting asbestos remediation expenses incurred by the DIA in its stewardship role for this government-owned building.

Founded in 1885, the Detroit Institute of Arts is one of Michigan's treasured cultural institutions, attracting thousands of visitors each year and contributing richly to the city, region and state. The funds granted will help the DIA recover a portion of those prior infrastructure costs -- moving the organization forward in its continued efforts to regain financial stability during one of this state's worst economic climates. No funds were allocated to support programs or operations.

We understand the efforts of the administration and legislature to satisfy this prior funding commitment for the Detroit Institute of Arts. However, we must also remind our leaders of the needs of the hundreds of arts, culture and arts education organizations of all sizes that contribute richly to our state and its communities.

ArtServe opposes legislative line items in principle. It is a process that negates the state-mandated, competitive, peer adjudication grant review process administered by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. It is a process that eliminates the opportunity for a fair and equitable distribution of state resources to serve the public and its needs and interests.

Therefore, while we support increased funding for Michigan's arts and cultural organizations, ArtServe urges the present and incoming administration and legislature to carefully weigh the significant role of the creative sector as an economic driver and transformative force as it considers its responsibilities to invest in Michigan's arts and cultural institutions.

Arts, culture and arts education organizations contribute over 75,000 jobs and over 21,000 creative businesses to Michigan's economy. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation reported in 2008 that arts and cultural organizations furthered state cultural tourism and economic development goals by generating $1.8 billion in state tourism revenues and $1.5 billion in personal income through their employees. In an economy with a 13% unemployment rate, we should be working to retain and attract jobs in the creative sector just as we are in business and industry.

In spite of these economic benefits, the state's investment in the arts has been cut 90% since 2002, positioning Michigan as the 48th of 50 states in per capita funding for the arts. The Fiscal Year 2011 budget for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs is just over $2.5 million. Of that amount, only $1.4 million is supported by the state's General Fund thanks to matching funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and other sources. The state's support for arts and cultural organizations is not comparable to the attention offered for business and industry in spite of the clear economic benefits.

ArtServe urges the state leadership to work with Michigan's arts and cultural leaders to develop sustainable strategies to restore funding for the arts, culture and arts education to appropriate levels.

ArtServe Update: MCACA FY2011 OFFICIAL BUDGET

MCACA FISCAL YEAR 2011 BUDGET

Last week, the Conference Committee on General Government met to vote on the General Government budget for Fiscal Year 2011. The total appropriation for the MCACA in Fiscal Year 2011 will be $2,560,100 - a $200,000 increase from the current Fiscal Year due to increased federal funds received from the National Endowment for the Arts.

However, while the MCACA budget was left intact, the conference report included language stating that the three council staff was to be paid out of the council's grant budget instead of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Strategic Fund's Job Creation Services Fund. Knowing the MEDC would push for this, ArtServe spent the past few months working with legislators to include $400,000 in an administrative line for the council in the conference report. Unfortunately, due to the amount of money the legislature has to work with we were unable to get the conference committee to include money for the council's administrative staff.

In addition to losing approximately $400,000 to administrative costs, the overall MCACA budget will be decreased by an estimated $72,000 due to unrealized funds from the MCACA tax check-off. The legislature had "penciled" in $100,000 in an effort to ensure that a supplemental appropriation was not needed.

Breaking down the Conference Report for the MCACA:
- Total appropriation of $2,560,100 (of which $1,050,000 is federal money, $1,410,100 in state General Fund dollars and $100,000 in individual donations)
- Minus around $72,000 in unrealized funds from the tax check-off box (slated at $100,000 -- Michigan citizens contributed around $28,000)
- Minus approximately $400,000 in administrative costs
- Total FY 2011 grant budget of approximately $2,088,100

While the exclusion of funding for administrative staffing costs is unfortunate, it's not the end of the world as the MCACA will continue to provide limited but much needed financial support to this state's arts and cultural organizations. Moving on, I look forward to working with a new administration and legislature next year to begin recapitalizing the MCACA.

MCACA FY2011 GRANT INFORMATION

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs met to discuss and approve grant programs for Fiscal Year 2011 and has decided to move forward with the grant process using the same funding structure as the current grant cycle.

The council agreed to keep the grant programs the same as Fiscal Year 2010, but made a few changes to the grant requirements as well as providing updated deadlines. Below is a detailed report of the changes and/or requirements for each grant program.

MCACA FY 2011 Programs
1. Program for Operational and Project Support (POPS) - Changes for FY 2011:

All MCACA applicants (except mini-grant applicants) must register with the Cultural Data Project, www.miculturaldata.org. A full data set entry will be required by January 25 in order for grantees to receive their first payment. Note: Municipalities, government organizations and other organizations that are not primarily arts and culture-focused entities (i.e. church, school) are exempt from this requirement.
All awarded applicants are required to notify their legislators of their grant award. A copy of this letter or email must be submitted with their contract. This also includes mini-grant recipients.
All applicants must submit an IRS Determination Letter. Due to the new Tax-exempt requirements, MCACA will be verifying current nonprofit status by checking to see if a form 990 has been filed in the last three years.
A $50.00 non-refundable application fee will be required for this program.

2. Regional Regranting Program

Changes---all of the above apply to regranting agencies, except no application fee. Mini-grant recipients will be required to notify legislators.

3. Services to the Field

Changes---all of the above, except no application fee

4. Bus Grant Program

Timeline and other minor administrative changes to this program need to be discussed by staff.

5. NLACM Retention and Engagement Youth Grant program

NLACM members need to review program and recommend any changes.

Grumbacher paint is looking for accomplished artists who can teach two hour workshops at a major retailer. Specifically, we are looking for those capable of demonstrating a still life, landscape, seascape, and floral. We have developed a flexible curriculum in acrylics for an artist to use or to adapt it to fit the artist’s style. Compensation is $100 per workshop. ISLAND is proud to announce the second application round of the Hill House Residency Program, providing dedicated time and space for writers at any stage in their career and emerging musicians. Applications for round two, which will run from November 2010 to April 2011, are due September 15.

The goal of the Hill House Residency is to support talented emerging songwriters and writers at all stages of their career with a two, three or four week stay in a semi-secluded log cabin near East Jordan, Michigan. Room and board is covered along with a selection of instruments and some basic recording gear. The musician residency also offers performance opportunities and a small stipend to aid in professional development. Musicians and writers age 21 and older from anywhere in the world may apply. Solo writers as well as teams of up to four people may apply. There is a $20 application fee.

The Art Committee for the Harlow Expansion at the MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland, in Midland, Michigan is seeking qualified and experienced sculptors to submit proposals for a monumental sculpture to be permanently featured in the lobby of the Harlow Expansion.

Interested candidates must have references from four large-scale projects in the past five years (medical/corporate/municipal/public). The Harlow Expansion is a 265,000 SF project that will be completed in phases between the end of 2010 and the middle of 2012.

This project is a five level addition attached to the current hospital structure. Final installation of the monumental sculpture is tentatively scheduled for the first or second quarter of 2012.

The Eighth Annual C. S. Lewis Festival Board of Directors invites artists to submit original works of art for the 4th Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition

The award winning C. S. Lewis Festival is inviting artists to base their work on Tolkien’s book , The Hobbit. The theme for the 2010 Festival is Lewis and Tolkien: The story behind the phenomenon.

The Lewis Festival Juried Fine Art Exhibition features an opening night reception in honor of the winning artists. Entrants are encouraged to read The Hobbit, and then create a work of art inspired by some thought or idea from the book.

The 2010 C. S. Lewis Festival Juried Fine Art Exhibition is open to all residents of the United States over the age of 18. All media will be accepted. Please submit a digital image of your work via the Lewis Festival website at http://www.cslewisfestival.org/ by September 8, 2010. Collaborative present Advocacy Boot Camp on August 9. Reserve your seat

Advocacy Boot Camp (8:30am - 12:00noon)
This half-day intensive session will have you ready to advocate for your
cause in no time! You will learn the basics of nonprofit advocacy,
including why it's important and what is legal. We will also provide an
overview of various advocacy tools and strategies - including how to
develop your messaging and advocacy plan. We will also have time to break
into groups to begin to develop your own advocacy plan. And if that's not
enough, we will also learn tips from a nonprofit leader in advocacy
efforts

Advocacy Boot Camp is taking place in the morning but you are welcome to
join MNA and the Detroit Food and Fitness Collaborative for the afternoon
session - Farm Bill 101.

Farm Bill 101 (1:00pm - 4:00pm)
For everyone working for a more equitable food system, there will be an
afternoon session on the Farm Bill and its impact on urban areas. This
session will take a deep dive into the legislation and why it's important
to know how the Farm Bill affects our food system from production to
consumption. Participants will also begin to outline action steps leading
up to the bill's reauthorization in 2012.

We are pleased to invite you to Our Cities, Our Classroom, a regional conference to explore place-based education as it relates to urban settings on August 19, 2010, held on the University of Michigan-Flint campus.

Place-based education seeks to immerse students in what is local - the environment, culture, heritage, and art of a specific place – and use those unique characteristics of a community as the basis for the study of language arts, social studies, science, mathematics, and art. By providing hands-on, real-world experiences for learning, students contribute to resolving local community and environmental issues by turning schoolyards, communities, and cities into classrooms.

The Our Cities, Our Classroom conference aims to bring together educators from this region's urban centers who want to discover more about place-based education. By attending this conference you will:

• learn from community organizations and teachers how to incorporate the unique characteristics and resources of your community into your classroom or other educational efforts;

• meet and network with educators and community members interested in engaging youth in community development work; and,

• realize the many exciting educational opportunities for students available in and around your city.

Conference breakout sessions will include the following themes:

1. Place-based education best practices, including:

•What is place-based education?

•How to build school/community partnerships

•Place-based education and Michigan curriculum standards

•Community and asset mapping

2. Urban place-based education content areas, including:

•Urban agriculture and food systems

•Green building

•Land use and water quality

The Thornapple Arts Council of Barry County is seeking artists to exhibit

their work during its 2010 series of Art Hops in Hastings, Gun Lake, and

Delton, MI during the early evening hours on July 30, August 20, and

December 7. Gallery space will be provided inside a participating

business for each artist. All artwork must be original and hand made by

the artist. Artists must provide an appropriate means of displaying their

work. No fees are charged but all artists must submit an application form

with examples of their work. Anyone interested in participating is

The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the Rome Prize competition. One of the leading overseas centers for independent study and advanced research in the arts and the humanities, the Academy offers up to thirty fellowships for periods ranging from six months to two years.

Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy’s eleven-acre center in Rome and receive room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend. Stipends for six-month fellowships are $13,000 and stipends for eleven-month fellowships are $30,000.

Arts Education Toolkit and Resource Guide

ArtServe is pleased to announce the release of its Arts Education Toolkit and Arts, Culture and Arts Education Resource Guide. Made possible by a grant from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Kennedy Center National Partnerships Program, the toolkit was developed following months of planning, research and, most importantly, discussions with teachers and advocates from around the state, to determine what would serve as the best resource to inform, equip, engage and inspire arts education advocates to action.

ArtServe Michigan's Arts Education Toolkit is a resource to help you effectively take action on arts education issues at the national, state and, most importantly, local level. It contains information, guidance and resources applicable to the dynamics in Michigan combined with information provided in the model Arts Education Advocacy Toolkit developed by the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network in 2009. We hope that this resource will be helpful to you in gaining the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to work with others to urge awareness and support for arts education in Michigan schools.

The Arts, Culture and Arts Education Resource Guide was developed to accompany the ArtServe Michigan Arts Education Toolkit. It serves as a handheld guide to arts education advocacy in Michigan.

While ArtServe will be strategically mailing this to each of Michigan's 549 school districts, 16 statewide arts education associations and other stakeholders it is important to spread this any arts education advocate throughout the state. Executive Director Summary:

Qualifications:

Washington, DC—The 170th meeting of the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body to the National Endowment for the Arts, will take place on Friday, June 25, 2010 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. EDT.

The public is invited to attend in person or to watch a live webcast at arts.gov.
Among the highlights on the agenda will be the announcement of the recipients of the NEA’s three honorific programs; NEA Jazz Master Fellowships, NEA National Heritage Fellowships, and the NEA Opera Honors. Eighteen artists will receive a total of $450,000 in recognition of their significant contributions to their respective fields.

A second feature of the meeting will be the presentation from NEA Director of Research and Analysis Sunil Iyengar of a new report from the NEA’s Office of Research and Analysis, Audience 2.0: How Technology Influences Arts Participation. The report uses data from the NEA’s Survey of Public Participation in the Arts to explore how technology and electronic media influence arts participation.

Finally, Kathy Roth-Douquet, founder and president of Blue Star Families, will provide an overview of the Blue Star Museums program, a partnership with the NEA to provide free admission for military families to more than 750 museums across the United States this summer.

BBAC Announces New President & CEO

BIRMINGHAM BLOOMFIELD ART CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT & CEO

Birmingham MI; June 14, 2010 -- The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center Board of Directors announced today the appointment of Addie Langford as President and Chief Executive Officer. She succeeds Jane Linn, who is leaving after leading the art center for almost seven years. Linn initiated the succession process and has worked with the staff and board on the transition to new leadership that will implement the organization's recently completed strategic plan.

"After an extensive search, we have identified the right candidate to succeed Jane Linn's impressive contributions and lead the BBAC into the future," said Joshua Sherbin, BBAC Board Chairman & General Counsel for TriMas Corporation. "Addie Langford meets our objectives of finding a visionary leader with superb managerial skills and clear commitment to art education."

Ms. Langford's strength lies in her unique combination of arts administration, studio art, and teaching experience. She has experience managing a ceramic production line that serviced 100 galleries nation wide, spearheading a ceramics youth employment program for disadvantaged teens, and has completed major public art installations. She is a lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design (Ann Arbor), and most recently was Assistant Director of the Art School at the Flint Institute of Arts. Langford brings a sophisticated creative vision and a deep understanding of the arts education field.

"I am so pleased to join the BBAC as President and CEO. It is is an honor to be charged with the stewardship of an arts organization this rich in history, talent and vision," remarked Langford. "I look forward to working with the BBAC board of directors, staff, faculty and students to enrich existing programs and bring innovation and energy to the BBAC mission. I also look forward to meeting each individual who attends the BBAC, be it for exhibitions, classes, or a coffee with friends."

Ms. Langford earned a BFA in architecture from The Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art. As a Fulbright Fellow, Ms. Langford explored the relationship between Renaissance tapestry and contemporary collage in Madrid, Spain, where she produced and exhibited a body of large-scale drawings.

The I-Park Foundation, a not-for-profit international arts community sited within an expansive nature preserve in East Haddam, Connecticut (USA), is seeking creative proposals in the following disciplines:

Thanatopolis, an alternative memorial park/space in the advanced conceptual phase of its development, is looking for works that harmonize with the long-term goal of the project, which is to re-imagine our cultural and personal relationship to death, memory and memorialization - and to engage the above creative fields to bring about a new, profoundly sacred and evocative landscape/sound-space.

Selected projects will be presented at the Thanatopolis Exhibition on October 2, 2010.

Judging will be by a distinguished panel on the basis of creativity, site-responsive, cultural relevance, feasibility and, perhaps most importantly, efficacy in engaging the issues of death, memory and memorialization.

Those invited to execute their physical, performance or music/sound sculpture pieces for the Thanatopolis Exhibition will receive a creative fee of $2,000 plus a budget for travel, materials and incidental expenses. Applicants invited to exhibit 'paper' (un-executable, future, conceptual) projects will receive a creative fee of $700. Additional funding may be available depending on the scope of the individual projects.

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Invites Film Festival Grant Applications

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is accepting applications for its Film Festival Grants program for nonprofit film festivals in the United States that will take place during the 2011 calendar year.

The Film Festival Grant program has awarded just under $4 million in total funding to film festivals since 1999. Grants totaling $450,000 were granted to twenty-four U.S. film festivals in 2009.

While the grants are awarded for a variety of programs, film festivals are encouraged to submit proposals that make festival events more accessible to the general public, provide greater access to minority and less visible filmmakers, and help strengthen the connection between the filmmaker and the public.

Only festivals based in the United States that have held at least five festivals as of December 31, 2009, are eligible to apply this year. Individual festivals are not allowed to receive grants in successive years. Festivals that do not screen films in a theatrical setting are not eligible to apply.
Eligible film festivals may apply for grants at four funding levels ranging from $2,500 to $30,000, depending on the cash budget of the festival. Grant requests must target one or more concrete elements within the festival. No grants will be awarded for general support.

Included in the bill was a total appropriation of $2,560,100 for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, $300,000 above current year spending and $200,000 above the Governor's recommendation and the House approved appropriation for Fiscal Year 2011. The increase comes from additional anticipated federal revenue from the National Endowment for the Arts.

This current fiscal year, staffing and administrative costs are being covered primarily by the MEDC through its Job Creation Services fund. One of our concerns has been that the MCACA would have to cover its administrative costs out of the grant budget because the Governor had included no funds for staff - the House concurred with her recommendation. The Senate Subcommittee went against the Governor's recommended and House approved version of the bill by leaving the 3 FTE positions in the Job Creation Services line in the Strategic Fund budget.

Here's a summary of the differences:

Governor's Recommended and House Approved:
* MCACA - Total budget of $2,365,000
* Minus $400,000 in staffing costs
* Minus around $75,000 in unrealized funds from the tax check-off box (slated at $100,000)
* Total grant budget of around $1.8 million

Senate Substitute:
* MCACA - Total budget of $2,560,100
* Minus around $75,000 in unrealized funds from the tax check-off box (slated at $100,000)
* Total grant budget of around $2.1 - $2.2 million

While I know that there is still a long way to go in the budget process, I believe this to be a small victory. This is the first time in a long time that the Senate has chosen not to recommend a cut to the MCACA grant budget. I understand that this is still 93% below levels of 2001, but given the circumstances, I think we have much to be proud of by preserving funding for FY 2011.

I would like to thank all of the advocates residing in the subcommittee member's districts that sent emails asking them to preserve funding and include additional funds for staffing and administrative allocations. There's no doubt that your communications played a key role in ensuring that the subcommittee would choose not to recommend a cut for the first time in years.

The budget, passed by the full Appropriations Committee yesterday afternoon, will now go before the full Senate for a vote. Following its passage, the bill will be sent to conference committee where members from the Senate and House will hash out the differences. Trust that ArtServe will continue to monitor the budget situation as it progresses and will keep you informed each step of the way.

Enthusiasts Encouraged to Illustrate "Old is the New Green" in Photos Featuring Michigan's Architectural Heritage; Contest Offers Chance to Win "Green"

LANSING, Mich., May 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Officials from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) today issued a call for entries from both amateur and professional photographers to showcase Michigan's architectural heritage by entering the "Old is the New Green" photo contest between May 1 and June 1, 2010.

During the month of May, State Historic Preservation Offices and communities around the country celebrate historic and cultural resources. National Historic Preservation Month is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The National Trust has declared this year's theme to be "Old is the New Green," in recognition of the significant role historic preservation plays in more environmentally and economically sustainable development.

"What better way to show our appreciation of Michigan's rich architectural history than through photo documentation from those that have an eye for the unique and the creative skills to capture it on film," said MSHDA Executive Director Keith Molin.

By submitting one or more Old is the New Green-themed photos, you'll become eligible to:

The Michigan Downtown Conference Planning Committee has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a Michigan-based artist to create unique and hand-crafted awards for this year's conference being held on September 13-14, 2010 in Bay City, MI. The awards are to reflect the positive image and vibrancy of Michigan's downtowns and traditional commercial districts.

The theme of this year's conference is "Michigan's Downtowns: Yes, We're Open!", an outgrowth of the nationally acclaimed Shop Main Street video produced by the Michigan Main Street Center @ MSHDA last year. The conference brings together community leaders across the state and serves to present case studies and best practices on successful downtown development strategies as well as provide new ideas to attendees for use in their own communities.

ArtServe Michigan Public Policy Update: Senate Appropriations Testimony & Great Debates

ArtServe Testifies before Senate Subcommittee in Support of MCACA

This morning, Jennifer Goulet and Mike Latvis testified before the Senate Appropriations Economic Development Subcommittee in support of the grant budget of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

As you will see in the attached document , ArtServe is requesting that the Senate preserve funding at the Governor's requested and House approved level of $2.367 million and to add $400,000 for staff and administrative costs for three full-time employees. While in any other year an increase to pre-moratorium levels of $10 million would be requested, we feel that preserving funding and providing for staff and administrative costs is a key priority in such a tough fiscal year.

The subcommittee, Chaired by Senator Mark Jansen (R - Grand Rapids), will report its recommendations to the General Government Subcommittee before it releases its substitute to House Bill 5880 on May 13th. Trust that ArtServe will continue to work behind the scenes as well as directly with advocates who reside in each committee member's district to preserve funding for Fiscal Year 2011. Stay tuned to further updates as the legislature progresses through the budget process.

The national initiative, now in its sixth year, aims to improve teaching and learning in the arts by supporting and promoting sustainable partnerships between community arts education organizations and public schools. During the current school year, more than 11,500 students in eight cities are receiving year-long arts instruction thanks to 14 partnerships funded by the Partners in Arts Education Program. Grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to support arts education partnerships during the 2010-2011 school year.

MetLife Foundation Partners in Arts Education Grants are designed to support exemplary partnerships that:
1. serve large numbers of public school students during the school day or extended day
2. exemplify best practices in creating and sustaining effective partnerships
3. provide high quality arts education experiences
4. prioritize student learning and achievement in the arts and
5. address national, state, and/or local arts education standards.

The application deadline for the 2010-11 program is 5:00pm (EST) on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Grants are restricted to the following 33 cities listed here and in the guidelines. Only organizations that are Full Members in good standing of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts may apply. Art & Ideas’ summer photography show called “Social Realism 2010” is being scheduled for Aug.-Sept. of 2010. Entries are now being considered for spots in the exhibition to show multiple works by two serious local photographers. The juried selection process will place significant emphasis on the social commentary and meaning of the images, as expressed by both the images and thoughtful artist statements. (For reference, artists might consider the “Social Realism” as practiced by photographers in the 1930s – but in our case, we’re also looking for humor and irony depicted about our current situation in USA and SE Michigan!)

Photographers submitting work must reside in Southeast Michigan.

Entry fee: $10 per entry. Submission must be made using USPS mail only (emailed submissions will not be considered), or in person at Art & Ideas (15095 Northville Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170). Each submission must include the following:
1. An artist’s statement that explains the social commentary made in the images submitted.
2. The artist’s resume.
3. One CD containing 10 to 20 images in JPEG format (at least 1 megabyte file size – width of ~5”). (If sending multiple images, you could group images into series of common themes.)
4. A list of images from the CD, including the size of the printed versions.
5. A non-refundable check for $10 made out to Art & Ideas LLC.
6. The artist’s email address, if he/she wishes to receive notification via email.

Award: A six-week exhibition of the two chosen artists’ works at Art & Ideas in Plymouth Township, showing up to 10-20 images per artist (depending on print size). Artists will be responsible for the printing and framing of their work. (Other contract details will be discussed at the appropriate time.)

Juror: Shaqe Kalaj is artist-in-residence at Art & Ideas. For several years she has exhibited her photography, prints, woodcuts, paintings, and mixed-media pieces throughout Michigan, as well as outside of Michigan in the USA and in Japan and South Korea. Shaqe describes herself as a “content-based” artist who bases each series of work on a “guiding question” of social relevance.

SECOND BIENNIAL OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBIT – CALL TO ARTISTS

The City of Brighton Arts and Culture Commission (BACC) is seeking submissions of outdoor sculptures for exhibit in the ongoing Brighton Biennial Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit in and around downtown Brighton. Two sculptures will be installed as replacement pieces for two large exhibits from the original Biennial on 8’ x 8’ concrete pads (see pictures of existing locations on the web site). One sculpture is for a new location with a concrete pad measuring 11’x7’x20”h (see picture on web site). We are also seeking two smaller pieces for exhibit on 2’x2’x3’6” pedestal bases.

Selected pieces will be exhibited for a minimum of two years. Installation of the pieces will be coordinated with the Brighton Fine Arts Festival the weekend of August 14-15, 2010. Online and print brochures will be provided to the public to inspire self-guided and docent walking tours of the exhibit. All work must be for sale and remain in the exhibit for the entire duration. The deadline for application submission is May 27, 2010.

We are hoping to reach artists all across the US regarding a Call for Entry for a National Juried Exhibition to be held in Stockton, California, at The Haggin Museum (CD Deadline: July 7, 2010). We are seeking the help of State Art Councils and Commissions in an effort to reach as many artists as possible. Below my signature is a short announcement that could be pasted into a listserve, e-blast, newsletter, or website, for any artists or organizations in Michigan that might be interested.

A prospectus can be downloaded at www.hagginmuseum.org. The Haggin Museum has hosted many National Juried exhibitions, most recently the Plein Air Society and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. In addition, their collection includes the largest number of Albert Bierstadt paintings in the world.

It is a fantastic venue for art and we issue press releases to artists’ local newspapers for all artists who win awards in this show. Thank you for any and all help in sharing this “Call for Entry” with your resident artists and organizations.

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), through its New Leaders Arts Council of Michigan (NLACM) youth advisory group, is offering youth-grants of up to $2,500 to Michigan Non-profit organizations in support of youth-based projects as part of a community engagement and retention strategy. The NLACM is dedicated to promoting the Arts and Culture in Michigan, and is focused on supporting young leaders. NLACM is proud to offer these grants tailored for young leaders in Michigan focused on arts and culture projects.

These are small, up to $2,500 grants, with very specific criteria. MCACA only has $20,000 for this program..

National Research Project: Professional Development of Artists (from ARTISIN LLC of NJ)

ARTISIN LLC is a New Jersey consulting firm working with Creative Capital and the Joan Mitchell Foundation conducting a national research project regarding professional development opportunities for artists. We are scanning the entire country, state by state, digging from the state level to the local arts agencies, to community-based organizations, grant makers, and beyond, to address many questions related to professional development for (self-defining) professional originating artists that are not matriculating students. This phase 1 work, to be completed by mid-April, is part of a multi-phase project; a second foundation will be joining for phases 2 and 3. The findings will be shared with the field. This is a significant first step on the road to a national advocacy movement to support artists, their needs, their communities and the organizations that work to support them. Your organization will be identified as a participant in the research.

The information you provide will benefit artists and their careers. Participation by selected organizations like yours will make this project a success. Your inclusion in this groundbreaking research will be an asset to the field.

Calling all Michigan-Based Artists! (Please forward to others who may be interested)

The Michigan Downtown Conference Planning Committee has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a Michigan-based artist to create unique and hand-crafted awards for this year's conference being held on September 13-14, 2010 in Bay City, MI. The awards are to reflect the positive image and vibrancy of Michigan's downtowns and traditional commercial districts.

The theme of this year's conference is "Michigan's Downtowns: Yes, We're Open!", an outgrowth of the nationally acclaimed Shop Main Street video produced by the Michigan Main Street Center @ MSHDA in 2009. The conference brings together community leaders across the state and serves to present case studies and best practices on successful downtown development strategies as well as provide new ideas to attendees for use in their own communities.

The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, May 14, 2010. Request for Proposal (RFP) details are available on the conference website at www.michigandowntownconference.org. For questions, please contact Kelly Larson at larsonk@michigan.gov.

MCACA Announces FY 2010 Grant Awards

This afternoon the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs met to approve its Fiscal Year 2010 Funding Plan. The Council awarded $1,537,000 in Operational and Project support grants as well as its Services to the Field program to 161 organizations in 35 different counties across the state.

In addition to the $1.5 million in grants awarded this afternoon the Council has funded its Regional Regranting Organizations at $500,000 as well as $60,000 in grants to school districts, bringing the total amount distributed by the MCACA to just short of $2.1 million for Fiscal Year 2010.
